According to the CDC, homicide is the number one cause of death for African-Americans ages 15-35.
Urban Specialists is a national organization focused on eliminating the culture of violence in Urban America by creating catalytic citizens that can advance positive change in low-income communities. The organization invades urban culture to disrupt toxic elements with intrusive alternative life experiences and opportunities that transform values and ideas to institute positive beliefs and behaviors. By transforming ideas, values, attitudes, morals, and behaviors, Urban Specialists are able to empower citizens living in low-income communities to put an end to victimhood and take control over their own lives, neighborhoods and slowly end the cycle of poverty.
Urban communities are being destroyed by senseless violence. According to the CDC, homicide is the number 1 killer for African-Americans ages 15-35. Income inequality is a big determinant of crime rates. Robbery and assault are among the most common crimes reported in predominantly poor neighborhoods and data from the Bureau of Justice show that persons in poor households at or below the Federal Poverty Level have more than double the rate of violent victimizations as persons in high-income households, and higher rates of violence involving a firearm.
At its root, violence is a result of a lack of opportunity. Opportunity is born in employment and education. Through OGU we will teach OGs how to use their influence to drive economic and educational opportunities for themselves and others. By using the Seven Principles of decision making and delivering on the Three Core Actions, we teach practical, real-world solutions that fit your specific community. We can spread that positive message throughout our communities and across the nation.
